Paris Hilton marks 14-year anniversary of inventing the selfie in a snap alongside Britney Spears – Daily Mail

She is credited with having paved the way for a host of reality stars, including Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner.

And Paris Hilton boldly declared herself the inventor of the selfie, as she shared a 14-year-old photo of herself posing with pop icon Britney Spears on Friday.

The social media trailblazer, 39, celebrated the anniversary of the throwback picture with the Toxic hitmaker, 38, as she dubbed them both ‘legends’.

The famous duo both rocked their signature blonde locks in straight hairdos and wore light make-up. Paris was seen wearing a grey vest with a necklace while Britney opted for a satin cream shirt.

The entrepreneur captioned the snap: ’14 years ago, @britneyspears and I invented the selfie #LegendsOnly.’

The blonde pair have been pals for many years, and Paris opened up about Britney’s personality and their friendship on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live show in September.

She said: ‘I saw her this summer. We’ve had dinners, I saw her in Malibu. I just love her so much. She is so sweet and so innocent and such a nice girl. We just talk about happy things. Music, fashion… fun things.

‘I never like to bring up negative things and make people feel uncomfortable so I’ve never talked about [the conservatorship] with her.’

Paris was referring to Britney’s conservatorship, which is controlled by her father and began in 2008 following her infamous 2007 breakdown where she shaved her head at a salon in Tarzana, California.

Britney subsequently lost custody of her children and was placed under a 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold in 2008 at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, which spawned the need for a conservatorship by her father.

Britney wants to have her father removed, claiming he’s unwilling to share control of her more than $60million fortune and she recently announced she won’t perform until things change.

Paris shared her thoughts on the conservatorship with host Andy, saying: ‘I feel like if you are an adult you should be able to live your life and not be controlled.

‘I think that maybe stems from me being controlled so much so I can understand how that would feel and I can’t imagine right now if that was still happening to me.

‘After just working your whole life and working so hard, she’s this icon and I just feel like she has no control of her life whatsoever and I just don’t think that’s fair.’

Paris has faced her own challenges, as she opened up about her past trauma in her documentary This Is Paris, which was released in September.

The reality star said that she was abused and subject to ‘torture’ during her time at Utah’s Provo Canyon School as a child.

She revealed she was verbally, emotionally and physically abused during her time at the school.

Other stars have spoken out about their experiences at that school or others like it, including Michael Jackson’s daughter Paris Jackson and tattoo artist Kat Von D.

Provo Canyon School is now under new ownership and the administration has said it can’t comment on anything that came before, including Paris’ time there.

Owners of the school declined comment, pointing to a statement on the school website that said the previous owners sold the school in 2000.
